Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Collect for this Sunday asks God, who manifests His power above all by pardoning and showing mercy, to bestow His grace abundantly upon us and "make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasure of heaven."

The first reading is from the Prophet Amos: 6:1a, 4-7

Reponsorial Psalm: "Praise the Lord, my soul!"

The second reading is from Paul's first letter to Timothy: 6: 11-16

Paul charges him to keep the commandments until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel is from Luke 16:19-31 and is the story of Lazarus, a poor man covered with sores, lying at the door of a rich man. When Lazarus died, "he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham from far off and Lazarus at his side." Now, the rich man begs for a drop of water but Abraham tells him that he received what was good during his lifetime and now there is a great chasm between them.

What is the lesson for each of us? Are we ignoring the poor, the outcast, the hungry? What am I doing to help those who so desparately need help? The refugees, the migrant workers, the disabled, the homeless in our land so in need of help.
